Forza Motorsport coming to PC?

Postby ajokay » 03 Mar 2015, 15:49

There's a possibility that Forza Motorsport 6 could be coming to the PC with the release of DirectX 12 for Xbox One and Windows 10

Seems MS didn't learn from the whole Halo 2/DX10 thing then…

OK, I'll be upgrading to Windows 10 anyway, and if it's good value, possibly picking up FM6. But again it does look like MS are using a popular gaming franchise to force people to upgrade Windows.

It's Interesting that Windows 10 is being offered to anyone with Windows 7 or 8 as a free upgrade. I guess they finally want to get as many people as possible off of the older OS's do they don't have to spend so much time, money and effort in the future supporting them (like they've had to do with XP).

Quite which void Forza 6 would fill on PC, I don't know. It's a void that currently exists and is only partially filled with games such as Need for Speed Shift 2 (which I felt had a very similar feel to Forza) and Grid/2/Autosport, and will be completely full when project CARS comes out. Go more arcadey then that's catered for with stuff like Test Drive, Need for Speed, The Crew, which have all bee on PC for ages. Go more sim and you're going up against the likes of Assetto Corsa, rFartor 2 and iRacing which are all highly regarded.

Agreed, bizarre decision. 'Simcade' is best suited to consoles, so however they released it they'd be compromising in one or both areas. It's also why I still have reservations about Project Cars.

I seem to prefer those kinds of games to full-on simulators though because of the lower barrier to entry. There's still enough variety and difficulty in Forza/GT to develop and become faster over time, but it's less "serious" than doing so in iRacing and others.

I think the appeal of these games is how accessible they are. You can drive your favourite road/race cars on recognisable tracks in a good looking game while also having a handling model that's not too difficult and gives you an acceptable impression of what the real cars would be like to drive. They also hit that range of people that like to collect cars and drive them casually without having to compete against others.

If I'm honest that's like sticking a massive money grab sign on the box of the game.
Forza isn't the type of game that will be competing strongly with AC and the likes of those types of games.
But if it wasn't meant to why is it making a move there? Do you think they are trying to compete with Project Cars then?
Personally Forza should stay on console.

Forza is also a recognisable brand in its own right. As PJ says there's a tiny little gap it fits into and it fits into it well (when it isn't lacking content due to rushing it for release...). I'm sure it'll sell reasonably well.

Market & Brand
As good as AC and PrC might be, people recognise and follow a brand. AC and PrC are pretty unknown to those who don't follow the genre religiously I'd imagine.

**edit** dammit Nik.

If it has all the awesome cars that 4 did, such as the Scion tC, RX-8 R3, Maserati Quattroporte, (I mean the more "regular cars, not necessarily these ones) I would buy it, but it goes all super cars "bc they're so fcking awesome!", not gonna bother.

TBH it makes sense. If you are developing a game for one platform and it costs next to nothing extra to release it for another because it is running exactly the same under the hood then why not? They won't be losing time or money porting it, it would be native on both systems. In my mind it's sensible as not releasing it on both would be closing a potential revenue stream. If it takes 0 hours work, even if only 10 people buy it on PC that's still 10 extra units shipped out the door. It's why I kinda like how MS is going under Nadella. Should mean more cross-platform support going forward (And not just in Windows what with .net ports going forward).

Any exclusive game for Xbox One will not come to the PC, they lose the tagline of exclusive the instant they do that and those games are what drives the console sales.

I think if this happens it'll be a vote of no confidence in the Xbox One. Sacrificing a major platform exclusive in order to ship more units is highly unusual, and I'd expect it to be a timed exclusive for Xbox One if a PC version is coming.

Still, Forza is probably the second most recognisable sim racing brand after Gran Turismo in the eyes of the wider gaming public, so I think it would do well.

It would still be exclusive to Microsoft, so they'll be getting their money either way. I wouldn't expect it to appear on Steam or anything.
