Realish Rally Chronicle Round 5 - Group B Germany

Postby camp_bell » 01 May 2021, 17:44

It's time to jump forward another decade and tackle the only tarmac rally of the season. We're driving the 4WD Group B monsters at Germany!

You will need to join the Realish Racing Dirt Rally Club here to take part.

Cars: Group B 4WD
Location: Baumholder, Germany
Stages: 6 (4 short, 2 long)
Conditions: Mixed
Start: 1/5/21 @ 01:00
End: 15/5/21 @ 00:59

(Note that due to DST, rallies now begin and end at 01:00 on Saturday UK time)

You will only have one run, however the stage order is below (full details of conditions, etc will be in game) and you don't need to do all six stages in one sitting.

Shakedown
Oberstein
Ruschberg
Waldabstieg
Short service area
Verbundsring
Innerer Feld-Sprint
Kreuzungsring Reverse

Give me these cars over the RWD lot any day of the week. At least you know where you stand with a Group B car - in that it's always trying to kill you.

I did deliberately pick two of the fastest rallies in the game. You're welcome.

I'd rather the quick stuff than the slow stuff in these, less turbo lag to worry about 8-)

Group B RWD is my favourite class in the game.

I've never done group b on this before. I tried it for the first time last night. Don't see any points for me in Germany or Poland!

Figured if I was gonna die anyway I might as well push. Aside from flying so far off the road it reset me before I even landed and losing control across the finish line and squeezing through the gantry sideways at a bowel-evacuating speed, I had a decent run. Not many times down yet to get a picture of where I'll be overall though.

Well that was a disaster. I got two punctures from two pretty innocuous crashes in stage 1. No way I was going to drive two more stages on three wheels so yeah

Well, I ain't winning this one

My run is here by the way: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1014683439

@camp_bell

I have a question about "track limits" as regards Poland which is coming up.

Are the limits essentially the road itself or what the game defines as clean?

I ask because Poland has a few sketchy areas that people discovered through our official esports series last year.

Our decision was that we let the game be the judge and it's up to the player to find the fastest, "technically legal" line (ie: allow the cuts).

That made more sense than ensuring everybody recorded their runs (as not everyone has this capability, and people who don't have the capability theoretically have an advantage) and then having subjective manual judging. With the game setting "objective" limits they're the same for everyone.

@SereneLogic would know more as he runs the AOR leagues; I haven't explored all the limits myself or know which ones give any potential advantages; I only know of a few small ones but I'm sure as we begin to practice in Time Trial we'll see what ghosts are doing.

Argh and ugh. It would have been close, but I probably should have just about won that one.

A little surprised to find myself on the pace after being so out of it in the RWD nonsense. Did the hard work of getting through the two long stages, and pulled out a slither more of time on the first proper night stage. Made a silly error a few turns into S4 (clipped a stone on the inside of a square right I'm normally nowhere near), and then lost further time a few turns later trying to push too much in an effort to reclaim the lost time, and ended up losing even more. Another error towards the end of S5 cost a bit more time, so I figured I'd take it easy on the final stage and ended up clawing some time back!

Oh well. As always it will take 100% consistency to beat @BlueSpearman so can't complain, and happy to be back up the top. I've got practically no experience of Poland so not expecting a repeat result there.

Since not everyone is able to record their runs, we need to go with what the game says is OK as it's impossible to enforce otherwise. However, finding and exploiting unintended exploits like that isn't really what this club is about and it would be nice if people didn't deliberately take the piss.

Second rally on the trot I've lost a position by a couple of seconds. Bugger.

So don’t cut across the potato field then, got it

Curious to see this now. Happy to come away with top 10 here considering how terrible I was. Last time in the stratos I'd never used the handbrake so much. This time around I've never seen "time to disqualification" so much. Hoping for improvement at Poland...I've replaced my 320mm flat bottom with a 280mm rally rim to help me hug trees faster.

Well that was a bit of a car wrecker. 6 DNFs from 19 starters, including a genuine frontrunner!

Away from the destruction, it was another close rally with @BlueSpearman just 8 seconds ahead of @supernicebob at the end, with @PJTierney and @lazaros18 both within 1 minute of the win and @Sam Hill just missing out on 5th by 2 seconds.

  1. @BlueSpearman 22:48.095
  2. @supernicebob +8.458
  3. @PJTierney +28.373
  4. @lazaros18 +59.141
  5. @sin_racing +1:52.415
  6. @Sam Hill +1:54.736
  7. @MrRandom287 +2:18.209
  8. @WRC000 +4:21.002
  9. @Chris Williamson +4:57.474
  10. @carrot1401 +5:59.600

Updated championship standings are available here.

There's a few small cuts at Poland that are easy to do by accident (overshooting a corner and getting away with it) but the big ones are pretty wild.

This gains 3 seconds apparently, not cool.

Essentially, for any esports series we now advise organisations to not use Poland at all.
