Realish Rally Chronicle Round 4 - H3 USA

Postby camp_bell » 22 Apr 2021, 18:53

No YOU forgot to post the event on the forum!

Welcome to round 4 of Realish Rally Chronicle! After the destruction derby at Scotland, it's another fast but hopefully less deadly run through the New England countryside.

You will need to join the Realish Racing Dirt Rally Club here to take part.

Cars: H3 RWD
Location: New England, USA
Stages: 6 (4 short, 2 long)
Conditions: Mixed
Start: 17/4/21 @ 01:00
End: 1/5/21 @ 00:59

(Note that due to DST, rallies now begin and end at 01:00 on Saturday UK time)

You will only have one run, however the stage order is below (full details of conditions, etc will be in game) and you don't need to do all six stages in one sitting.

Shakedown
Tolt Valley Sprint Reverse
Hancock Hill Sprint Reverse
Beaver Creek Trail Forward
Short service area
North Fork Pass Reverse
Hancock Creek Burst
Fuller Mountain Ascent

Does this mean that the Zandvoort stewarding post is coming soon? :)

Already set a (dry) World Record on one of the Stages, but this is going to be a tougher rally than Scotland

Streaming my run tonight on Twitch though :)

Had a reasonably smooth run. Managed to brush off a couple of substantial bodyslams on rocks without picking up punctures. If I hadn't overshot a junction I might even have taken the fastest time in the final stage.

Dammit @BlueSpearman I thought I'd get you this time

Taking the mistakes I made on my run into account I would probably have been within 3-4 seconds of you, so it looks like my pace was just short of victory anyways. Scotland I think I threw away as I lost about 40 seconds so a few spins and rolls.

My full run is here for anyone that wants a look: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/998325977

Also a World Record run here when I was getting a feel for the roads:

I'm not really sure how you didn't. There's no way I could drive with the level of aggression and commitment you do; it looks like you're playing a completely different game. I'm braking so much earlier and more tentatively and can't react as quickly. For a comparison I played my recording of the last stage at Scotland at the same time as your stream and you pull ahead constantly until you crash, then if you reset the videos so we're equal you pull ahead again. It would be great to have the CREST telemetry back like we had for Dirt Rally 1 so we can overlay two drivers runs.

I'm happy enough with my run though I had a couple of spins and stalls and the Renault is a complete dog on wet gravel, especially when geared long. 1st and 2nd gear need to be fed in so carefully because it'll actually bog down on uphill sections, it understeers through slow corners and wants to swap ends through quick ones. Much better in the dry though, so I went in hard while the sun shone and took it very gently when things got moist.

That’s interesting analysis :)

So it looks like I may potentially be faster (in the Stratos at least), but that increased speed (plus the distraction of me streaming my runs) leads to more incidents which ultimately cause me to lose time.

I couldn’t drive that Renault at all, like you said it’s a dog and then you add the turbo lag and it’s a recipe for disaster in my hands :)

I’m looking forward to the Group Bs. I’m quick in them but I can’t necessarily go as flat-out in them as I can the Stratos, they’re just a bit too wild for that.

Do a barrel roll!

Anyway, a pretty good run. Getting beached on a junction at the end of stage 3 was as bad as it got and my pace wasn't too bad.

That actually started off well, then it ended with me aiming for the spectators so they would cushion my impact.

It was at this point I realised I'm a terrible person.

Not a huge amount to write home about this time, which is largely a good thing. I'll still have a bit of a waffle about it as always though...

Definitely felt more comfortable with the car this time round, but still can't get enough consistency to be able to push confidently and get up to the top times. S1 was a bit wobbly, but S2 was pretty good and I wasn't too far off the ultimate pace. S3 went well for me too and a took a good 10s off my best practice time.

I was 14s off the lead at the mid-way point, but only 4s off PJ. If I'd really pushed on the second half of the event then I'd maybe have been able to get second if everything went perfectly, but I think it was far more likely I'd make mistakes and and run the risk of falling down the order like last time. So I largely played it safe on the last three stages, which I think was the wiser decision with the diminishing light levels too. As a result, all the stages went pretty smoothly - though for some reason I really struggled with grip in the opening sector of the penultimate stage so had to give up a fair chunk of time there.

Onwards to Group B...

(Nice tribute from @lazaros18)

Pipped by @SereneLogic at the post! Well done. Maybe should have pushed more in the second half overall - oh well.

Honestly, that was a really tough and annoying rally for a H3 RWD. I was having a blast in the wet, but the dry surface kept throwing my car around with little to no warning. So I ended up doing approximately a dozen pirouettes
